Funda Kunye: Empowering Early Childhood Development in Hout Bay
Funda Kunye is a small NPO based in Hout Bay, Cape Town. Our goal is to equip educators with the necessary Early Childhood Development (ECD) skills and resources to enable them to provide a quality early learning program to the children in their care for lifelong impact.
2023: Building Foundations
In 2023, funds raised supported the holistic development and education of vulnerable children in Imizamo Yethu, Hout Bay. The funds addressed poverty and inequality by enhancing access to quality early childhood development (ECD) services in five daycares. Specifically, the funds were used for:
- Teacher and principal training
- Essential resources and equipment
- Management skills development for ECD practitioners
- Field worker support for educators
The goal was to empower caregivers with ECD skills and resources, creating a nurturing environment for children. Beneficiaries included ECD centers, teachers, supervisors, parents, children, and children with disabilities. This initiative aimed to have a long-term positive impact on the community by promoting quality education and holistic development for vulnerable children.
2024: Expanding Our Reach
In 2024, Funda Kunye was excited to announce its expansion. We took on an additional seven day cares, with a firm commitment to educate, empower, and equip educators. Our focus was to build on the successes of previous initiatives and further strengthen the ECD program’s impact on the community.
2025: 2020THRIVE
Besides our very necessary Early Childhood Development training programes working with educators in Imizamo Yethu and for the first time, Hangberg, Hout Bay, our focus for 2025 is the “Year of 2020THRIVE” for Funda Kunye, marking an exciting milestone with the launch of our ‘Learn Together@Home’ program.
Our goal is simple: to help primary caregivers support the growth and learning of young babies and children in an easy-to-understand way, using recycled materials to make learning fun and accessible at home.
We hope to create a space where primary caregivers are upskilled with knowledge on the importance of laying a strong foundation in the preschool years through nurturing experiences and engaging activities. This ensures children have the tools to construct their own successful futures.
We thank JDI and the Cableway Charity Challenge for having us again this year and for the enormous impact the funds have had on our small NPO!
